dwarkesh patel on whether scaling will be enough for AGI. very in-depth with arguments for both sides.

on the pepperino front i'd like to add an edit link to the 404 document not found for non-existant doc views plus the time difference in the recently edited.

i just published tempolin 0.9.4 and also the tempolin-examples project with demo code (though there's not much there yet). i'm definitely missing the constant memory example plus maybe template benchmarks. i'd be interested to find out how JTE can be faster.

bits and pieces of my media consumption in 2023, incomplete list.

songs of the year:

tv & movies of the year:

  • didn't manage to see neither oppenheimer nor barbie, but they're on the list
  • didn't manage to see the creator, but it's on the list
  • the d&d movie was bad and very entertaining
  • rebel moon was also bad and less entertaining
  • leave the world behind
  • blood coast
  • reacher

games of the year:

  • i liked baldurs gate 3 (BG3) but somehow couldn't continue playing it.
  • most played game is, probably, bannerlord. again.

pepperino archives are implemented - it's just that there's not much there yet.

what's left?

  • search: easy and fun
  • access control (i.e. user management): icky
    • registration / login / logout
    • email verification
    • user settings
    • user profile
  • blog comments

access control is the elephant in the room because i haven't thought and didn't want to deal with EclipseStore schema updates yet.

update: login and logout are done

access control for pepperino's edit and store functionality is implemented.

also implemented a very simple search.

search ranking is: title match is worth two points, text match worth one. sum up for every keyword in q.

http 401 Unauthorized: authentication - you're not logged in
http 403 Forbidden: authorization - you're logged in but you don't have the rights

the naming's confusing.

very interesting article by Dan_Luu about search engine quality and, possible, the decline thereof.

How bad are search results? Let's compare Google, Bing, Marginalia, Kagi, Mwmbl, and ChatGPT

Spoiler: it doesn't look good.

even better,

In their original Page Rank paper, Sergei Brin and Larry Page noted that ad-based search is inherently not incentive aligned with providing good results
